Team Blue Lagoon has officially expanded the designated swimming area at Malta’s iconic Blue Lagoon, offering swimmers more space and improved safety ahead of summer 2025. The expansion, announced by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), includes a 12% increase in the main swimming zone and the addition of two nearby inlets to the left of the jetty, which are now exclusively reserved for swimmers. These areas were previously accessible to small boats and jet skis, raising safety concerns.
This move is part of a broader two-year sustainability initiative aimed at enhancing the visitor experience while protecting the Blue Lagoon’s fragile Natura 2000 ecosystems. Improved management of vessel traffic and designated berthing areas have also been introduced to help streamline maritime operations in this high-traffic zone.
Other initiatives rolled out by Team Blue Lagoon since May 1 include improved waste management, increased cleaning routines, new sanitation facilities, and heightened enforcement against littering. Patrols have been stepped up by environmental authorities to safeguard both land and sea.
A key highlight of the project is the launch of the
Book. Protect. System, a free, online visitor booking platform designed to limit overcrowding. While visitor numbers in summer 2024 sometimes reached up to 12,000 at once, the new system caps entry at 4,000 people at any given time. The platform is available at
bluelagooncomino.mt and offers a quick and easy way for tourists to plan their visit.
With these developments, the MTA and Team Blue Lagoon are working to ensure that the Blue Lagoon remains both a safe and sustainable destination for years to come.
